ADULT LECTURE SERIES - THE REALITY & ILLUSION OF JANE AUSTEN'S ENGLAND WITH DR. KAREN GEVIRTZ
Come join us for a 6 week lecture series for adults. We will be discussing many different topics, including arts/humanities, health/wellness, and current technologies.
Our speaker today is Karen Gevirtz from Seton Hall University’s Department of English.
Henry Nobley/Fitzwilliam Darcy tells Jane Hayes/Elizabeth Bennet in the film Austenland (2013) that history is a “simpler world where love is straightforward and lasting.” That’s certainly the world of Jane Austen’s characters as we know it from popular media. This talk uncovers some of the rich, neglected aspects of Austen’s world, and explores what’s lost and gained when we use Austen and her novels to make the past into “Austenland.”
